A good virtual pet game makes your cat feel like it notices you. That comes down to three things: care loops that are short enough to do every day, a cat that reacts in small, surprising ways, and something to look forward to tomorrow.

The weak ones swap that for timers and pop-ups that push you toward the shop. When you try a new game, give it two days. If you want to come back on day three because of the cat, not because of a countdown, it is a good one.

Good for: people who want a cat moment twice a day and nothing more. Caveat: you watch more than you play.

Cats & Soup

HIDEA’s idle game puts cats to work in a forest kitchen, chopping vegetables and stirring pots while you decorate and unlock new stations. It is free to download, and the cats keep cooking while you are away.

Good for: cozy players who like to decorate. Caveat: like most idle games, it rewards frequent check-ins more than long sessions.

My Talking Tom 2

Outfit7’s Tom is the classic phone pet. You feed him, bathe him, put him to bed, teach him tricks and play mini-games, and he repeats what you say in a funny voice.

Good for: younger players and anyone who wants hands-on care for one cat. Caveat: expect ads.

Tamagotchi Uni

Bandai’s Tamagotchi Uni (2023) is a modern take on the egg-shaped pet, worn like a watch and able to connect online. It is not cat-only, but if “tamagotchi cat” is what you are looking for, this is where that feeling lives today.

Good for: people who want a pet off their phone. Caveat: you have to buy the device.

Nintendogs + Cats

Nintendo’s 2011 pet game for the 3DS lets you pet, groom and play with dogs and cats using the touch screen. It still plays well on a 3DS, but Nintendo closed purchases in the 3DS eShop on 27 March 2023, so today you need a physical cartridge.

Good for: anyone with a 3DS in a drawer. Caveat: you need 3DS hardware, which Nintendo no longer makes.
