Giving Tuesday 2026 is on Tuesday 1 December 2026, the Tuesday after US Thanksgiving. To make it count for an animal shelter, check the shelter first, ask what it needs most, then give money, time or a share of its appeal on the day.
This guide covers each step, with free, small and larger options, and how to see your gift arrive.
Key takeaways
- Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that started in New York in 2012.
- Before you give, check the shelter is real and well run, and ask what it needs right now.
- You can help without money: share, volunteer, foster, or rally friends.
- For Pink Paw, a cat shelter in Kaunas: a free tap (Token Tails pays), $1 on Moon Rave, or a gift from your own wallet, each with a public payout.
What Giving Tuesday is
GivingTuesday describes itself as a movement for generosity around the world. It was created in 2012 at the 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City, and it falls each year on the Tuesday after US Thanksgiving, after the big shopping days.
For shelters, it is one of the few days when many people are thinking about giving at the same time. Many shelters plan an appeal for it, so watch their websites and social pages in late November.
Before you give: check the shelter and ask what it needs
Two short checks make your gift go further:
- Is the shelter real and well run? Look for a registered charity number where that applies, a real address, and clear reporting. In the US, Charity Navigator rates many charities. Our guide on how to tell if an animal rescue is legit lists the signs to look for.
- What does it need most right now? Money is the most flexible gift: a shelter can spend it on vet care or on whatever runs out that week. Many shelters also publish a wish list. See what cat shelters need for the usual list, then check the shelter’s own.
Giving Tuesday appeals sometimes come with urgency (“only today!”). A good shelter will still welcome your gift on Wednesday, so take the time to check.
Ways to help on the day
Give money. A one-off gift is fine; a small monthly gift started on Giving Tuesday can be easier for a shelter to plan around. If a shelter has announced a match for the day, giving during the match window can stretch your gift. Only count on a match the shelter itself has announced.
Get friends involved. Offer to match your friends’ gifts up to an amount you choose, or give together as a family, a class or an office.
Share the appeal. A share costs nothing, and a shelter’s appeal travels further when people who care pass it on. Add one line about why you care.
Give time. Ask about volunteering for the busy weeks around the holidays, or about fostering. The ASPCA explains what being a foster caregiver involves, and our guide on how to foster a cat covers the first steps.
Give from afar. You do not have to live near a shelter to help it. Our guide to donating to a cat shelter online covers ways to give across borders without big fees.
Help Pink Paw on Giving Tuesday
Pink Paw (Rožinė pėdutė) is a cat shelter in Kaunas, Lithuania, and the shelter Token Tails pays today. Here is what is live now, and who pays for each:
- A free treat (Token Tails pays). Tap on the give page and Token Tails sends Pink Paw a 0.01 USDC treat from its own budget. It costs you nothing, one treat per player per UTC day. Token Tails’ budget is 1 USDC of treats a day, reset at 00:00 UTC, so on a busy day the treats can run out until the next reset.
- $1 = 1 cat on Moon Rave (you pay). On Moon Rave, each $1 adds a dancing cat to a live dance floor. By card, Token Tails pays the full $1 out to Pink Paw on-chain; in USDC on Arc, your wallet pays the Pink Paw split directly. See how Moon Rave works.
- A wallet gift (you pay). On the shelter payouts page, you can send an amount of USDC you choose from your own wallet. It goes through the open-source ShelterSplit contract, which pays Pink Paw’s wallet in the same transaction.
Moon Rave and wallet gifts are not tax-deductible donations, and none of them comes with a promised match.
After you give: check that it arrived
A Giving Tuesday gift should not disappear into a black box. Ask the shelter how it reports on donations, and look for its updates in the weeks after.
For gifts to Pink Paw through Token Tails, you can check yourself:
- Every payout appears on the shelter payouts page, with a link to its transaction. Each one carries a short memo, so free treats (
tt:page:,tt:heist:) and Moon Rave gifts (tt:rave:) are easy to tell apart. - The impact page shows the totals with a date and a label for where each figure comes from.
- To check one transaction step by step, follow our guide to verifying a crypto donation.
When you look, you will see many sponsor gifts from Motored, a company owned by Token Tails’ founder. They are sponsor money from a related party, labelled as such, and not gifts from the public.

Tuesday 1 December 2026. Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday after US Thanksgiving, and GivingTuesday's own site lists Dec 1, 2026.
Will my Giving Tuesday gift be matched?
Only if the shelter or a sponsor has announced a real match for the day, so check the shelter's own page. Token Tails does not promise a match for gifts to Pink Paw.

It depends on the charity and your country, not on the day. Ask the shelter whether it is a registered charity where you pay tax. Gifts on Token Tails' Moon Rave are not tax-deductible.
